Culture is a hot topic in business these days.  Are the employees happy? Do they enjoy their jobs? Most likely the service you get from them will be the same and you will be happy with the experience.

What about healthcare?

A quote from the movie Escape fire “when medicine became a business we lost our moral compass.”

This doesnt have to be true. It’s time to copy business models like Zappos where employee engagment is the number one priority. Sales follow.

Siegelman has an article in INC about hosptial culture.  http://www.inc.com/paul-spiegelman/why-you-should-care-about-the-culture-in-a-hospital.html

How many hosptials post internal employee satisfaction with their services? This may be the one way to compare hospitals that is fair and isn’t influenced by case mix or other demographic/geographic factors. Many employees may use the services of their own hospital because that is their best option in their insurance benefits, but are they really satisfied?

Hosptials could save lots of money that is paid to consultants if they would just ask their own employees three simple questions.  do you use this hospital for your healthcare needs?  If not, why? If so what do you like the most and what do you like the least?  Employees are both employees and patients. As such they offer a unique view of the organization: one that is probably the most accurate of all!

Are employees happy? do they get along? are they well taken care of? would they want to be patients here?

If the answer is yes, no doubt your patient care services are first rate!
